The OT cultic system had an important part to play in God's plan of redemption, however, it was always only meant to have an interim role and was in place until sin could be dealt with once and for all. The yearly Day of Atonement testified to the fact that the first covenant couldn't comprehensively address the polution of sin and thus the worshipper's conscience was never perfected. It was obvious that significant changes needed to be wrought in the way sin was delt with so that worshippers could stand boldly in God's presence all the time with untroubled consciences.
