The early church was dealing with a division between Jewish and gentile Christians. Some of the Jewish Christians were imposing the keeping of the Old Testament laws and regulations as necessary for salvation. However, after Peter seeing a vision from God and seeing Cornelius, a roman centurion that was not Jewish in race or practice being accepted by God, Peter proclaimed that it was not necessary for the Gentiles to practice Jewish practices. But this message of the inclusion of the gentiles was confirmed by the Holy Spirit descending on the gentiles in power as He did at Pentecost.
