Let Not Your Hearts Be Troubled

This section (John 14-17) explains the role of the Apostles and the continuing work of the Triune God in the entire New Testament and subsequent Church history. Just as Jesus has rooted our relationship to the Father in His relationship to the Father, so now He grounds our relationship to Him in His relationship to the Holy Spirit. Chapter 14 introduces all of the themes treated in this section. Chapters 15-16 expand the material. In Chapter 17, Jesus prays to the Father that His instructions might be applied to His Church. 14:1-14 serve as an introduction to this subject matter by stating that the relation of the Apostles to the Father through faith in Christ is the foundation of the ongoing work of Christ through them. In verses 1-3, Jesus comforts His disciples in relation to the object(s) of their faith. In verses 4-7, He points to Himself as the sure way to the Father. In verses 8-14, He sets forth their union with Him as the ground for His continuing work through them. In this section, we will consider verses 1-3. Thesis: Jesus Christ has secured everything that is necessary for the hope of His people.
