In the Book of Esther we read of an evil plot to annihilate all of the Jews who were living in exile in the Persian Empire. And as we read of the plot we begin to realize that the Lord was going to use Esther and Mordecai (her uncle) to save the covenant people and to preserve them until they can return to the Promised Land. Ultimately, the promises of God were going to be worked out by the actions of this one refugee member of the king's harem. It is a glorious story of God's providential care. But the heroine of the story was a reluctant one. In order for her to fulfill her calling, it was necessary for her to cast aside her fears and step out in hope and trust (and with a little bit of goading from her uncle). Though she was technically a queen, she had little power and was at the mercy of the king. It is tempting for those who are not in positions of power and authority to think that they have no part to play in God's plan. But the Lord has placed a calling on all of His people – men, women, and children. If you think that you have nothing to contribute because you are "only a mom" or "only a woman", consider Esther. As Mordecai told Esther, "…who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?" – Pastor Schlegel
