Aim: To aim for perfection—through the church's faith in her pristine Savior.
Doctrine: Continued cycles of rebellion eventually twists and perverts the covenant community. This is manifest in gender role-reversals where women have to be brave, because the men are weak.
Exegesis: How unhindered sin-cycles gradually deteriorate the fabric of the culture: the help of aliens becomes ''necessary'' (3:31-4:3); the unusual service of women becomes ''necessary'' (4:4-7); the shameful goading of men becomes ''necessary'' (4:8-10).
Further application: How the cycle of sin must be broken by the church: errors of the past are not to be accepted as norms for the present or the future. Newness must be found in Jesus alone, in every generation.
Key verses: vv. 1-2a ''When Ehud was dead, the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD. So the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor.''
