The resurrection of Jesus is the greatest proof that God is fixing everything that is wrong in the world. Because of sin this world is not as it should be; everything in it groans to be remade. And into this world God sent his son, with a real human body and reasonable soul, like ours. He groaned with the rest of creation. And his groaning became most pronounced in the days leading up to his death.
The first half of Psalm 22 reveals Christ as our suffering Savior. He was forsaken and scorned. As he died a horrible death he cried out to his Father, "O Lord, do not be far off! O you my help, come quickly to my aid" (19). What Jesus prayed for was the end of his humiliation and his return to glory. And the Father answered Jesus' prayer. The sufferer of Psalm 22 declares, "You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen!" That is the message of Easter!
The second half of Psalm 22 previews Jesus' exultation. In these words we witness not only Jesus' glory but the effects of his glorification. Into a groaning world Jesus shares his resurrection power. The psalm's closing verses declare two truths that truly change history.
