On Mother's Day, recall that one of the persons who stood at Calvary and watched as our Savior was put to death, was his mother Mary.
Mothers have for 6000 years watched as their sons were put to death. The first mother to lose a son was Eve, whose son Abel was murdered by his brother Cain. What a sorrow it must have been for Eve - for she thought that Cain might be the promised redeemer, to put right the sin that she had unleashed upon the world. Now, she understood with horror the depth to which her sin had corrupted us all, even her own son.
Mary was given great promises by Gabriel the angel, that her son Jesus would be the promised Messiah to rescue His people and reclaim the throne of David forever.
When she brought Jesus to the temple, Simeon rejoiced to see the Lord's Salvation, a light to the world, and the glory of Israel!
But then Simeon told her that Jesus would be at the center of declension and fall, and that a sword would pierce through her own soul as well.
Mary soon discovered that her son's work would take Him away from her and entangle him in great matters, so that He would belong to the nation, and not to her anymore.
Mary's last recorded words were prescient: "Whatever He says to you, do it."
She watched His miracles from afar, and the progress of His work. Then in that last week, He went from triumph to ignominy, and in 12 short hours, was taken, tried, and put to death.
Mary watched as her Son died on the cross, and all her hopes and the promises were destroyed before her eyes.
Mary is the only mother to ever watch as her son saved a world! As she watched Him die, He secured eternal life for her and all those He loved!
