Someone once wrote, 'Who except God can give you peace? has the world ever been able to satisfy the heart?' Good question. The answer, of course, is 'No.' I've tried that route. So have most of you I'm sure. I mentioned in the past that man looks to boardrooms (work-'aholic'), barrooms (substance-'aholic') and bedrooms (relationship/sexual immorality-'aholic') in order to find peace and satisfaction in his soul and comes up empty every time. These earthly pursuits were never meant to satisfy the longing of the soul. So, what does it take to secure meaningful, lasting peace in our lives?
Thomas Merton claimed: 'We are not at peace with others because we are not at peace with ourselves, and we are not at peace with ourselves because we are not at peace with God.' True. Before we can have peace with anyone including ourselves we must be reconciled with God and that can only happen one way, 'we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ' (Ro. 5:1). This is the source; this is where and how peace happens in our lives.
