One of the tragic results of the fall of man is that we are not only alienated from God but alienated from ourselves and life in general. To "hunger" and "thirst" are used figuratively in this passage described the restless and dissatisfied condition of humanity. Nothing in the material universe can satisfy this hunger and thirst. In fact the opposite is true; those who have the most are often the most miserable. Life for most people is a serious of unsuccessful attempts to obtain true satisfaction in life. Jesus states in this passage what every person born of God filled with the Holy Spirit knows; that Jesus alone gives true and lasting satisfaction, purpose, security and fulfillment.
The greatest tragedy in life is for a person to feel that they have found genuine fulfillment and satisfaction in anything this world can provide. They will find out on the final day that it is a delusion that will end in eternal torment in hell forever. For those who are in Christ there is to be a growth in our experience of this. The more we seek of Christ the deeper will be our satisfaction and peace in this life. Our passion must be to know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings. That will only happen as we are conformed to his death. We must die to everything but Jesus Christ and when that has happened we will be powerful testimonies to His life.
