Most of us, at some point in our lives, will likely go through hard times that tempt us to say to God, "why is this happening to me?" Whether it's a sudden tragedy, a season of life when everything that can go wrong, does go wrong and relief seems like it will never come, or maybe it's some internal suffering like anxiety or depression that no matter what you try, it just won't lift. During such times we might be tempted to look to heaven and cry out "why is this happening to me?" But in our passage this morning, we see a different kind of response from the Apostle Paul, who experienced more hardship than most of us ever will. He knows something about suffering that we desperately need to learn: that we can rejoice in our suffering because God uses it in unexpected ways for the glory of Christ.
