Divorce always involves sin, but divorce involves more than just sin. Divorce is also rebellion against God and His covenant of grace. In our Scripture passage this week, we read that God threatens to cut off any of His people that corrupt marriage by marrying outside the faith, or by setting aside a spouse by aversion. Today we may take divorce lightly (the divorce rate among Christians is not significantly different than that of the general population) but here we learn that God considers it a breach of His covenant; God is witness to every marriage, and He calls out divorce as being violent, like a bloodied garment before Him! This passage is a strong exhortation to be faithful and pure in our marriage bond.
