Why did Jesus rise from the dead? What difference does it make? I. What does Jesus' resurrection mean? A. The verse states that we believe in him (that is, God the Father) who raised Jesus from the dead (v. 24). That is, we believe he actually did raise Jesus from the dead in history, really and truly. B. "Raised for our justification" — that is, being resurrected, God can declare us innocent of our sins. Because he was delivered up to die for our trespasses, by God raising Him from the dead meant the price was paid. The debt, the penalty, our liability to eternal damnation, etc. have been paid. His resurrection means we are forgiven and justified before God, declared innocent on account of what Jesus did. C. Other aspects of Christ's resurrection 1. If Jesus remained in the grave, then his continuing death meant his death didn't pay enough; that sin still needs to be paid off with death! 2. Your sins have been paid. 3. Christ will never die again: Rom. 6:9 4. Christ was raised with glory: 1 Cor. 15:43 5. He is the beginning of the living: 1Cor. 15:20 6. The resurrected Lord is exalted and at the right hand of God: Rom. 8:34 7. The risen Lord is interceding in behalf of sinners: Rom. 8:34 8. Every Sunday is a reminder that our sins have been forgiven, the debt has been paid, God's holy wrath has been appeased, his divine justice satisfied. II. What does Jesus' resurrection mean for you and me? A. You have to believe! B. Your sins have been paid. C. God will raise you up! D. You live for the one who was raised from the dead.
