After going through the different types of offerings and how they are to be offered from the offeror's point of view, God described to Moses the duty of the priests. Most of their activities were covered when the offering was described and what is described here is about the general duties of the priests, rather than those tied to a specific offering. What is emphasized in this passage is that the fire is not to go out on the altar. Even as there was an evening offering and a morning offering, it is repeated three times in the passage that they needed to make certain that the fire did not go out. As a picture of hell with the fire that never goes out, the priests had the responsibility to keep the fire, that God would start, burning. Another picture in the passage is that the priests needed to put on different clothes for different work. For making the sacrifices, they needed to wear the linen ephod. But when they carried the ashes outside the camp, then they had to take those clothes off. It also gives instruction for the grain offering as well, that only the sons of Aaron (whether yet priests or not) were allowed to eat it and they needed to eat it in courtyard of the tabernacle. There are many pictures in this passage that are picturing things about the Melchizedekian priesthood
