Yes, the local church is filled with sinners. Yet true believers acknowledge that they need someone else to live a perfect life in their place, and to die instead of them. Jesus. Because we need to become the kind of church Jesus requires, we need to know how Jesus requires us to get there. Our Chief Shepherd requires not only shepherds, but deacons too. What is a deacon? Some churches see a deacon as a person is in leadership, but he is not quite as qualified as an elder. Others reduce the deacon's role to building maintenance. Actually, the deacon is a servant. he is a person who loves to serve. he cares for people as a mother cares for her own children. In a biblical local church, the leaders are servants. Both elders and deacons serve. The only difference is their area of focus. Elders serve by caring for souls. Deacons care for more material issues. This becomes clear in Acts 6. The church doesn't only care for people's spiritual needs. The love of Christ moves people to care for other people--to be deeply interested in others' needs. Yes, we care about whole people, especially their eternal state. Churches swing to both sides: overemphasis on spiritual care to the overemphasis of caring for people's physical needs. Both churches are afraid of the risks the other runs. For this major work, deacons clearly need to be qualified.
