The Shunnamite woman was once the 'great' woman of Shunem. She was wealthy, influential, married, deeply pious and content. But that is all changed in this story. She appears now as a hungry widow, without land or home, without influence and without even food. She returns from a seven year sojourn in Philistia to find her home and lands in possession of the crown and goes to the king to appeal for their return. It just so happens that she arrives at the very moment that Gehazi is relating her story to the king of Israel. He is so enthralled by the story, and by the seeming coincidence of the woman appearing at just that moment that he treats her with great generosity.
But this story isn't in the Bible to suggest that every widow will get her land back when they appear before the king. This story doesn't teach that hard hearted despots will soften up eventually. No, but this story does point us towards providence, the understanding that God's sovereignty is applied for God's purpose and that resting upon the doctrine of providence is sufficient for the Christian to know peace in this life and the next.
