What is the greatest blessing you can imagine? Maybe having a miracle worker in your church who can transform any life through miraculous power? Consider how Luke views this. Imagine for example, God did a miracle through this man and drives out a demon. Would freedom from demon possession be the ideal state for the man who has been freed? Jesus shows that even if you could cast a demon out of a person, but he is not actually saved, not only does it not substantially benefit that person, but it can even leave him worse off than before. Rather, the most astounding blessing when God so transforms the heart, that that person begins to obey the word of God. Jesus calls those who do not grasp the word of God, an evil generation. Failing to submit to God's word brings condemnation. They love the miracles, but have many excuses as to why they won't obey Him. This is a warning, not just to them, but to us too. We can find any excuse not to obey God now. Even accusing Jesus of casting out demons by the power of Satan. Even so, Jesus declared He would give the miracle-seekers a final sign--He would even raise Himself from the dead. Even then, they will not believe. So maybe the reason you are not willing to submit is not the reason you are stating. The greatest blessing anyone can have now is to hear and see Jesus through His word, and to be able to obey His word.
