Mary Magdalene's distress over Jesus' death was dramatically reversed when the risen Christ spoke her name in the garden outside the empty tomb. In her joy she clung to Jesus but he told her that he must ascend to his Father and her Father. Thus she learned that her personal relationship to her Lord was not ended, but she also learned that his relationship to God was not the same as hers and the other disciples. He was the eternal Son who had taken on flesh - they were creatures who only began to exist. So Jesus appeared to her not only personally, but authoritatively as the One she must obey.
