In Romans 2:17-29 Paul identifies two marks of a true Jew and shows that a true Jew is one who possesses true inward change not mere outward privilege. The first mark of a true Jew is that a he obeys the law (possession without obedience is of now spiritual value). The second mark of a true Jew is that a true Jew has a circumcised heart (physical without spiritual is of no spiritual value): (A) Physical circumcision + obedience to the law = spiritual circumcision (25a); (B) Physical circumcision + disobedience to the law = spiritual uncircumcision (25b); (C) Physical uncircumcision + obedience to the law = spiritual circumcision (v26); (D) Believing Gentiles will stand in judgment of unbelieving Jews in spite of Jews having the law and circumcision (v 27); (E) True Jewishness and true circumcision are not outward or physical matters, but inward matters of the heart (vs 28-29a); and (F) It is God, not man, who grants praise to the true Jew (v 29b).
