In the light of what Paul has been saying about the law he realized the need to counter the tendency in man to adopt a negative view of the law. He shows how critical the law is to the very heart of redemption. The sermon seeks to explain how that in the old man, who is never without sin, sin is dead; and how while never being in a position where he is not accountable to the law, he can be alive without the law; and how sin revives in the old man and being alive, he dies. We see too that it is impossible to bow to truly Paul's teaching on the law and have a disparaging view of the law.
