Missions is indeed the heartbeat of the local church. There are many causes to which the church could commit its personnel and resources – social, economic, medical, and political – but of what lasting good are any of these if souls are not born into the kingdom of God as a result? The church must be committed to world-wide evangelization as a whole and as individual members. Otherwise we are tempting God to remove our candlestick (Rev. 2:5). The church at Antioch sent out the first missionaries, and is a model for all true New Testament churches. It was proactive. It was sacrificial. It was committed. No wonder those first missionaries “turned the world upside down”! If we had more churches like the Antioch church we would have more missionaries like Paul and Barnabas! Let us seek to emulate this scriptural church.
