This is the last sermon of the Ezra-Nehemiah series. The books end in a rather tentative situation in this thirteenth chapter. After Judah returned from the Babylonian captivity, God's people enjoyed a time of restoration and reform. The temple was rebuilt, the people were masterfully taught the Law, the walls and gates of Jerusalem were reconstructed, and God's covenant was renewed. All seemed well with this settled, orderly, covenant people. Yet we see the seed of corruption and declension is still in Israel! Governor Nehemiah concludes his book by asking God to remember all of his strivings to keep the covenant people pure, and his last struggle is keeping the covenant line of promise intact! What is at stake in this chapter for us today? What is the will of God today for believers in finding a marriage partner?
