"He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God."
Paul's reference to Abraham in this part of the letter has a twofold purpose. First he mentions Abraham to show that the gospel he was expounding, that of salavtion by grace through faith, was the same as what was revealed in the Old Testament era. Abraham was justified by faith, not works. His second reason for including Abraham was to hold him forth as a pattern of true faith. He is described as the father of the faithful, not because he was the first believer, but because his faith is the pattern which all true believers will conform to.
