Palm Sunday began a week in which our Lord Jesus went from being acclaimed the King of Israel at His triumphal entrance into Jerusalem, to humiliation, rejection, and execution at Calvary.
For two contrary reasons, our Lord was deemed worthless by the nation of Israel and disposed of.
Jesus foretold His murder by Israel's leader that week in the parable of the vineyard. The tenants murdered the beloved son, so that they might seize the inheritance from the owner.
But He also instructed them that their rejection of the Son would in no account succeed, because firstly, He is the beloved Son of God, and God His Father determines His value, not wicked men. Second, Christ applied the prophecy of the rejected cornerstone unto Himself: the builders rejected it, nevertheless, God made it the chief Cornerstone!
To the rulers of Israel, Jesus was worthless because He endangered their positions and authority.
But to others in Israel, Jesus proved worthless as a political messiah. He had the power to overthrow Roman rule, but He never exhibited the heart for it. Judas Iscariot was the only one to take this dissatisfaction with Jesus to its obvious conclusion: he sold out the Savior for the price of a slave, he cashed out just in the nick of time.
Christ's talk of His imminent death sealed His fate with this faction. And so the two different groups of Israel, agreeing on the worthlessness of Christ, for opposite reasons, conspired together to remove Him from the scene.
How often Pilate taunted them about the "King of the Jews," and how often they derogated Him as such!
Isaiah had foretold it all: Israel would reject Messiah, but the Gentiles would receive Him!
