The text before us today is, admittedly, a difficult one to understand. This fact is as true now as ever. There is little agreement among theologians and commentators from the time of the apostolic father Clement of Alexandria (A.D. c. 150 – 215), to the present day. Yet, this should not discourage us. Our presupposition is: the Bible is divinely inspired, inerrant and infallible. And by looking at the narrower and broader contexts, and by using the analogy of faith (that is, using Scripture to interpret Scripture and the clearer Scriptures to interpret the less clear), we can arrive at an understanding that does not do violence to the text nor to the Bible as a whole. This is a good spiritual exercise. This method of understanding the Scriptures is useful at all times and under all circumstances. So, let us look to the Word, and let us rely on the Holy Spirit to illuminate our understanding.
