Our emotions can lead us where our minds would never go if we were thinking biblically. P.T. Barnum, founder of the Barnum & Bailey Circus, made a fortune on the theory that "a sucker is born every minute." The circus may be gone but the statement is still true. Enter the internet! The internet has widened the door of opportunity for those that prey upon the undiscerning. A highly lucrative industry in some countries is scamming foolish Americans out of their money by promising to give them love or millions of dollars. When some in the church say that we don't need to emphasize doctrine or theology, because that is divisive, RUN. When some say we need to be in unity with any kind of belief, RUN. Gospel truth is the tie that binds us together, not unity for the sake of political correctness. In view of the many deceptive tactics by the enemy, John's words in our passage are absolutely vital for the preservation of God's truth. Don't believe everything. Rather, test it! False teaching is everywhere. "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world."
