If you have been redeemed from bondage and set free by the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ, what is your relationship to those who claim authority in this world? Do you have a responsibility to obey those in authority in the civil realm if you are set free? What if those in authority in the civil realm do not share your appreciation for the Bible or the God of the Bible? Do you still have responsibilities toward them? These are, admittedly, difficult questions but they are questions that must be answered. In the history of the church there were those who said that we have no allegiance to the civil powers (Anabaptists). There were also those who said Christians have an absolute duty to obey the magistrate in all things (James I, Louis XIV et al.). Our text today is one of many which gives the biblical answers.
