Last Lord's Day, we saw the ancient promise of a Savior renewed and expanded in the dying words of blessing to Jacob's son, Judah. That blessing promised glorious things for the future and the promise was not merely wishful thinking. That promise was the prophetic word of God. But when we come to the text before us today, around 1,000 years have elapsed between the blessing of Jacob on Judah and the times of Isaiah and the promise has not yet been fulfilled. In fact, the 1,000 years which have elapsed have seen both the exalted glory days of David and Solomon as well as the depths of the reigns of Ahab and Manasseh. Isaiah 9 was written in the midst of one of those dark times. He answers the question that must have been on the minds of the upright: will God ever bring the consolation of Israel? Isaiah answers, "yes".
