We come this morning to sink our teeth into the strong meat, the solid food, that this writer dishes up in abundance. The whole Bible is a cruise ship buffet, with unlimited feasting for all who care to show up with a clean plate (that is, a clean conscience). But I firmly believe that this particular book is the prime rib and king crab and lobster portion of said cruise ship buffet. If you're hungry for spiritual food, your order's up. Get the 15-inch plate and sharpen your fork and knife, because the Lord is about to start dishing and your Southern grandma has nothing on Him.
All right — with that metaphor out of the way, brothers and sisters, allow me to simply say that this exordium of Hebrews is utterly glorious, both in style and content. Its subject matter is the perfect Son of God; its style is elevated, perhaps matched only by the prologues to John and Luke in the whole of the NT. What we will see in this passage this morning is a sevenfold description of the Son of God (or eight-fold if you want to count glory and nature as two separate descriptions) that centers on His priestly work and elaborates on how He is the perfect revealer of His Father.
