The hard work of laying a firm foundation is absolutely necessary to the preservation and safety of a house, and yet that which is perhaps most important to the house cannot usually even been seen because it is buried deep in the ground. Most people are primarily interested in what they can see that is above the ground, not that which cannot be seen below the ground. In fact, a house with a shoddy foundation may look more beautiful than the house that has a good foundation, but it would be foolish to buy a house that was beautiful from the ground up that you knew had a very weak foundation.
The same is true in the spiritual realm. What is most important in our lives as those who profess faith in Jesus Christ is the foundation upon which of our lives are built. That foundation is Jesus Christ and His will (1 Corinthians 3:11). You can't separate Jesus from His will, as if you can have Jesus without doing His will. It is not merely coming to hear God's Word preached that evidences you have Jesus as your foundation. It is doing the will of Christ that is preached that evidences that He is your foundation. How is it that people would not be so foolish as to buy a beautiful house that has a faulty foundation, but they will build their lives upon a faulty foundation that will be washed away when the storms of life and that final storm of judgment come against it?
The Lord Jesus gives us a parable contrasting two different houses that faced the same storms—one house endured (Matthew 7:24-25) and one house was destroyed (Matthew 7:26-27). Let's consider these houses.
