This Evening Worship sermon continues the semi-monthly series titled, “The Christian Life in Picture.” This will develop the major New Testament metaphors that depict the Christian's identity. This sermon explores the Christian's place as an athlete in the Family of God. The picture of an athlete is one used with emphasis by Paul. It is a call for the Christian to bring his life into the discipline that conforms to the goal of running and winning the race before him. An athlete must be focused, prepared and trained to face opposition if he is to win the crown of victory. There is no warrant for treating the Christian life as though it can be separated and exist at alternative levels of discipleship and dedication. A person who has been redeemed by Jesus from the power and consequences of sin is commanded to discipleship. May this imagery speak to us of the matchless love that God grants the Christian through his grace.
