Very early in the Lord's earthly ministry, He had a confrontation with the Jewish authorities in Jerusalem. The confrontation was the first of what would be many confrontations during His short earthly ministry. Over time He would dispute with them on many points of doctrine and life. Among these were disputes over the right doctrine of the Sabbath day, the true nature of the Law, the dangers of adding human traditions to the written divine revelation, the identity of the true sons of Abraham, and the identity of the promised Messiah. But in this confrontation recorded in our text, he reveals a mystery which would be nearly universally misunderstood until after His resurrection, ascension and the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. The mystery which was revealed was that the promised Messiah must die and be raised again in order to save His people from their sins. That the revelation was doubted and disputed in the day it was revealed is no surprise to anyone familiar with the message of the gospels. The natural man will always doubt and dispute either the truth of the resurrection, or will doubt and dispute its necessity or efficacy. But without it, there is neither salvation or Savior. But we, as His disciples, both remember and believe. – Pastor Schlegel
