Thus far in our study we have examined the various doctrines which are related to the believer's union with Christ. These have revealed the work of God, or the means He has chosen to employ, through which He brings about the union. At this point we are examining the actual union itself. The Bible abounds with the theme that the true believer is recreated into a new creature, and thus is “in Christ” and exists in the sphere of His present existence, and in His infinite person, power and glory.
In this lesson we examine the corresponding truth that Christ is “in the true believer” as well. Both relationships, though difficult to fathom, are important to understanding our union with Christ.
It is from here that we can later develop what Scripture reveals to be true regarding the personal and practical benefits of the union. And, as we shall see, every aspect of the Christian life is directly related to our union with Christ. That is what led John Murray, the well known reformed theologian, to say this: “Nothing is more central or basic than union and communion with Christ.”
