We come this morning to the first exhortation, but by no means the last exhortation, in the book of Hebrews. Its main thrust is abundantly clear: Pay attention to the word of the gospel that you have heard! That, in a nutshell, is what the Hebrew writer wants us to do.
This exhortation was not originally delivered in the context of the attention economy. But oh! How closely it fits the conditions of modernity. Already T.S. Eliot described us as "distracted from distraction by distraction," and that was nearly a century ago. Imagine what he would have made of "this twittering world"!
Shut off the twittering world, remove the earbuds, look up from the phone, tear your mind off your desired entertainment system upgrades, and pay closer attention to the Christian message. That is the payoff of the seven quotations that demonstrate the superiority of Christ to angels. Because the good news has been abundantly witnessed to us by the Son of God, we ought to give Him our full attention!
