Leviticus 15 is a near total enigma to a great many Bible readers. Most probably conclude that it is about hygiene and public health from a physical point of view. Not so. Samuel Kellog well said in his classic commentary on Leviticus, "It is impossible now to miss the spiritual meaning of these laws concerning issues of this class. In these alone, out of many others, which from a purely physical point of view are equally offensive...these were taken...to symbolically emphasize that the fountain of life in man is defiled." Race pollution is the point. Spiritual race pollution is literally universal and the gospel is the only adequate answer. Man's need is far more desperate than most people realize. Sin in man is so deep it cannot be deeper. To be a sinner is bad enough, if it only involved the voluntary and habitual practice of sin. But this law of issues (bodily discharges, some natural some unnatural) testifies to us, even now, that as God sees man's case, it is far worse. Fallen man does not have to do anything to be an offense to God--his very being in its natural condition is offensive--defiled, unclean in desperate need of the washing of regeneration.
