In chapter two, the Apostle Paul continues to refer to his early conversion experience as a proof of the validity of his doctrine. In another portion of Scripture, the Apostle Paul makes another reference to his personal testimony and life experiences. In Act 20:23 and 24, we read, "…Chains and tribulations await me. But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. He was encouraging the elders of the church at Ephesus to be steadfast in the "gospel of the grace of God." The true gospel is always the good news that it is not according to works or personal merit that we are saved, but by the imputation of the merits of another – the sinless Son of God. And if it is of grace, it cannot be of works no matter how religious those works appear to be. There is always the temptation to try to earn peace with God and forgiveness of sins. It is tempting because it feeds our pride and satisfies our hunger for finding our own path to salvation. But we must contend for the gospel of grace and we must begin with ourselves.
