Chapters 11 & 12 form a bridge in John's Gospel between His public ministry (ch.1-10) and His private ministry and Passion (chap.13-21). At the end of chapter ten Jesus and His disciples leave Jerusalem to escape the Jews. They travel to Bethany across the Jordan, out of Jerusalem's reach. Jesus' final Passover is less than three months away. While waiting there for Passover, the Lord receives a messenger, the bearer of bad news. Jesus responds to bad news by teaching His followers some basic principles of discipleship.
