In Genesis 40 we find Joseph faithful, but forgotten - by man, at least. But it is clear that God is with him. In God’s Providence two of Pharaoh’s closest aides are sent to the prison in which Joseph is held. When they have troubling dreams they are further disturbed by the absence of a sorcerer to interpret the dreams for them. For Joseph, this presents an opportunity – an opportunity to show the greatness of God. When Joseph accurately interprets the dreams the Butler fails to fulfill his obligation in return – to whisper a word about Joseph in Pharaoh’s ear. Joseph is thus forgotten. But it wouldn’t be the only time Joseph would be forgotten – for another Pharaoh would ascend the throne who would forget Joseph, and the people of Israel would need to know that God is with them even then. The story of Joseph tells us that God is with us and has not forgot his covenant promises, fulfilled in Christ Jesus.
