On the one hand, Scripture teaches the complete and total sovereignty of God over all things—even over the wickedness of man and the devil (Psalm 115:3; Isaiah 46:10; Daniel 4:35). On the other hand, Scripture teaches the complete and total holiness of God in all that He is and does (Psalm 145:17; Hebrews 6:18; Romans 3:4). A Christian who leans not on his own understanding will uphold both God's sovereignty and God's holiness without diminishing the glory of either. To you whose faith is in the God of the Bible, there is great peace and comfort, for you are assured that whatever happens in this world (or in your world), you can rest in knowing that your Father who loves you from everlasting to everlasting is working all things for His glory and for your good. He makes no mistakes. It is not you who trust the Lord Jesus that need fear the future, but rather the wicked that turn and twist Him and His truth into lies that have reason to fear. The main points from our text are the following: (1) The Prophet of God Fears God rather than Man (1 Kings 22:15-18); (2) The Prophet of God Reveals God's Sovereign Use of Evil in Judgment (1 Kings 22:19-23); (3) The Prophet of God Is Persecuted for the Truth (1 Kings 22:24-28).
