The Bible teaches that salvation is free and unearned. It is a gift of God. On the cross, Jesus Christ purchased our pardon and reconciled His people to God; and, by faith in Jesus, we receive the gift of salvation, reconciliation and eternal life. For God, however, salvation was costly because it cost the life of God’s one and only Son. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are called to “take up our cross and follow Him.” Jesus teaches us three things concerning a disciple: First, a disciple loves his Master (v. 26); second, a disciple loses his life and follows in his Master’s footsteps (v. 27); and third, a disciple learns to count the cost (vv. 28-33).
