Self-righteousness is a stubborn tap root that exists inside the hearts of all humanity. It is difficult to uproot, indeed impossible for man to tear it out himself, but what is impossible for man is possible with God. When we come to our text Paul has made the case that our own righteousness cannot save you, whether we be Jew or Gentile. So, as a skillful fisher of men, Paul anticipates these objections and clears them out of the way, for he longs to persuade his fellow countrymen to embrace the righteousness that is in Jesus Christ that they might be saved. In these verses we meet with these objections, and see how Paul skillfully removes each and every one.
