The divisions Paul rebuked did not arise over sound and false doctrine, but rather because people turned their own personal preferences/opinions into doctrinal necessity. That is making man-made categories that divide people into factions so that real communion one with another is not possible. Fundamental to Christianity is having real communion with others who are part of Christ's one body. Paul clearly points out that people are saved only through believing the gospel, not through being included in God's covenant community. Unity is really very simple--it flows from humility. To realize how much we need Christ and how rich Christ has made us, is fertile soil for developing true unity with others.
