The first verse of Genesis 12 begins with the LORD speaking, indeed, commanding Abram, "Go forth from your country, . . ." This aspect of leaving “country” may not sound significant, but think of Abram’s age: 75 when he leaves Haran (Ge12:4). So it may not be much of a stretch to think that Abram had spent 70 years in Ur of the Chaldeans. Even if Abram had been raised in Ur and called by the LORD at the age of 60, . . . Ur was all that Abram knew. This was the place where Abram was raised. There were customs in his home country that Abram was familiar with: food, traditions, a way of life. Not unlike refugees who are forced out of their home countries. Abram was called to leave all that he was familiar with: to depart, to go out. How does this apply today to you? To those who have been called to "follow" the Lord Jesus Christ? Called out of an old way of "life", regenerated, saved from death . . . to new life, to new obedience?
