Sometimes the words which have fallen out of use and favor are the best. The word deportment is one of those words. "Deportment" is defined as, "the manner in which one conducts oneself: behavior." It is one's actions, bearing, comportment, conduct, or demeanor. The word combines both the actions and attitudes of someone. It refers, not only to what you do, but how you do it. The Christian's deportment has been a continuing theme throughout the letter to the Philippians. But the apostle's interest is not merely conformity for conformity's sake. His burden is that the Christian live, love, and labor in such a way that what is true regarding his redemption is consistently shown in his life, loves and labors. He is also concerned about the effect that the Christian has on those around him. The Christian always has a testimony whether he is conscious of it or not. The question is, what is the nature of that testimony?
