For a time, it was not uncommon to see automobiles on the road with a stylized fish decal with the Greek acronym ΙΧΘΥΣ and a bumper sticker with the words, "Jesus Is Lord." The ΙΧΘΥΣ fish has a long history born out of the persecution of Christians in the early church. The acronym, which spells the word "fish" in Greek, stands for, "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior." The fish is a reference to the evangelistic commission of being fishers of men. (Matthew 4:19) The symbol was a way for believers to confess the truth when that confession could easily be fatal. The persecution was such that to say that Jesus is Lord openly was a challenge to the world and to the Roman emperor in particular. It was to defy the assertion that Caesar was Lord. It seems as though the impact of the simple declaration that Jesus is Lord has lost some of its strength since the early days. But the text today is a reminder that He is Lord and when we confess Him, we are also standing against the world and tyranny like our predecessors did.
