Many things God hates, but one of the most heinous in the sight of the the Lord is that of division and those who would cause dissension. Paul addresses the problem in the Corinthian church by appealing first to their identity as a church of God. To be in relationship with God is to be whole and undivided. Therefore, the relationship among believers should reflect that truth. The world also seeks unity, but they seek it in all the wrong places. Peace can only be attained by a right relationship with Christ and association with His church. Yet, division is not always a bad thing. Sometimes it is necessary for believers to divide in order to expose those who would espouse false teachings. However, most divisions are rooted in pettiness and selfishness. Personal preference appeared to be the primary source of division for the Corinthians who divided over who had greatest teacher. Sadly, today we do not seem to be any different, and may in fact be far more petty as we will divide over far less.
