In this first message in a brief series on Ruth, we learn, from Elimelech taking his family to dwell in a pagan land, that what may seem like a minor compromise can lead to a major calamity. Also, we are reminded, through what happened to Naomi, that severe trials do come upon God's people, but they are filtered through the loving hands of God. Third, we can infer that Ruth was able to see something in Naomi and her teaching about Jehovah that, by God's grace, caused Ruth to be willing to leave her family and her country to follow Naomi back to Palestine. Finally, there is a warning here to those who, like Naomi's other daughter-in-law, Orpah, find the pull of this world to be too strong to resist.
