This passage affirms the authority of Paul's writings as on an equal plain with all the other scriptures, all of which carry the very authority of God himself. Our job is not to invent the truth but to find it in the revealed Word of God. Some people have always twisted the scriptures in order to justify their wickedness. Christians must thoroughly know the Word in order to discern error. In addition, we must not just study the scriptures alone, but in reference to the 2,000 years of church history and teaching that have preceded us, as well as within the life and context of fellow Christians, especially in the local church. The Holy Spirit uses the Word of God to bring us life, truth, and sanctification. Thus it is through the knowledge of the scriptures, by being "chained to them," that we grow in the grace of God and bring him glory. These "ancient words" are given by the Eternal One to the church for her enlightenment and salvation for every generation. It is by clinging faithfully to the scriptures that we are able to discern and reject the changing winds of popular interpretations which rob the gospel of its power.
