Today we are starting 1 Timothy chapter 5. Up until this time, Paul has been dealing with Timothy on a personal level, reminding him that he had been given a job to do. He was there in Ephesus to hold the line. You remember that Paul started by reminding him in 1 Timothy 1:3 that he had left him there to charge some that they teach no other doctrine. Then Paul tells him in 1 Timothy 1:18 that he is fighting a battle in war. He needs to fight well. He spends this whole book laying out what the good fight looks like. In this day and age, we don’t like the thought of disagreements or even of authority. We want, especially as a national people, complete freedom. Yet in the first letter to Timothy, we find we are 1.) under the authority of the gospel and 2.) we have clear guidelines in which that freedom operates. We also have the duty of helping others to know and walk in the truth. Let’s see what Paul tells Timothy about his horizontal relationships in the Church.
