The pardons of God are far more majestic than anything man ever does. Our own Governor violated the Constitution and illegally pardoned over a hundred criminals, yet nothing can be done about it. The victims of those crimes are deeply hurt by this brazen attack against the law by Governor Barbour.
Pardoning is God's prerogative. He decides whom He will pardon. He often refused to pardon sin in many Old Testament stories. He refused to pardon innocent blood-shedding by Israel.
Sometimes, God would partially remit or defer punishment for sin. Other times, he frankly overlooked transgressions.
But God promised that there would come a time when He would forgive all the sin of His chosen ones! He would do so by the substitution of His own Son in the judgment that sinners deserve.
People often oppose pardons as unjust - after all, the criminal is set free without proper punishment. Man's pardons, except in the case of mistaken convictions, are contrary to justice. Man's mercy is always opposed to justice.
The Pharisees objected to Jesus' pardon of sin, because they thought they didn't need any pardon, because they considered themselves self-righteous.
But the pardon of God through Jesus never sets aside punishment or judgment. The full penalty of our sin is paid in full.
So that God's mercy toward us in pardoning us never frustrates full justice. Instead, God shifts the judgment for our sin upon His own dear Son! Every particle of our guilt was laid upon Jesus at Calvary and He suffered the full wrath of God in our place, that God might pardon His people and maintain strict justice at the same time!
Praise God, our sins are expunged by Jesus' blood!
