Since the word "gospel" means "good news", it may come as something of a surprise that Paul begins his clearest exposition of the gospel (Romans) by giving us the bad news! It is as if Paul is a prosecuting lawyer, we are the accused, and he is calling forth three witnesses to testify against us that we have sinned greatly against God and that He is angry with us. Who are these witnesses? Creation, conscience, and commandment, each of which reveals the righteous character of God and exposes our uncleanness. Why does Paul do this? Because before you will come to the only Savior of sinners to find deliverance from sin and the wrath that is to come you must be shown your great and desperate need for a Savior! May God be pleased to show many of you your need for Him, and grant you the grace to embrace Jesus Christ, freely offered to you in the gospel.
